methodology
In order to compare different construction accounting software platforms, we collected a proprietary set of data points to compare and contrast. This included examining the cost, nature and quality of features offered by the software, third party ratings and reviews, and a combination of metrics collected by our team of experts. To arrive at our conclusion, we analyzed a total of 22 different metrics across five different categories.
Here are some of the categories we used to rank the providers that made the top of the list.
Prices
When it came to pricing, we looked at the initial price of the software and whether the company was transparent about their pricing. Those that offer transparent pricing performed better than those that force you to provide details in order to receive a personalized offer. We also looked at the cost range between the different pricing tiers a provider offers and the value these plans offer users. Price represented 10% of our weighted score.
Characteristics
After the price, we analyzed the data into a general functional category. This category examined the features most requested by contractors and defined which companies provided them. Those that had all contract features available without additional fees performed better than those that required you to choose a higher subscription service to unlock them. This included features such as providing quotes and estimates, labor costs, job management, budgeting, billing and invoicing, and Accounts Payable (A/P).
From there, we consider additional or unique features. Companies that had customer tracking, software integrations, and mobile apps performed better than those that didn't. Features accounted for 55% of our overall score.
Third Party Comments
We looked at third party ratings and reviews to find out what real users think about the software. The average threshold rating had to be 3.5 stars or better to get the highest rating in our search. We also weighted the number of responses and gave higher ratings to vendors with at least 300 positive reviews to reduce bias. These accounted for 5% of the total score.
expert analysis
Using a weighted rating system that also considered ease of use, outstanding features, popularity, and value for money based on actual user feedback, our experts created our own breakdown of each construction accounting software's reviews. Together, these criteria account for 30% of the total score.
How to choose a construction accounting software
There are three areas to consider when choosing a construction accounting software platform. The first area is cost. You want a platform that fits within your overall budget and offers the most value without having to upgrade with additional subscriptions or custom solutions.
Ease of use is the second point to consider. Not only you and your employees have to feel comfortable with the system, but also customers and subcontractors if you involve them in the tendering process and project management. Are you looking for a solution with a simple dashboard that allows access from general ledger to reports with a few mouse clicks.
Ultimately, you want a solution that you can customize if you have specific reporting or processing needs. This can be relevant for larger companies that need to manage multiple projects simultaneously and generate comprehensive reports and cash flow data for stakeholders.
Advantages of a construction accounting software
Construction accounting software can save you time and help you stay organized when managing your construction projects. By integrating pre-construction parameters such as bid and construction costs, contractors can quickly transition a project from the preliminary work phase to the project management/construction phase. Construction software becomes a complete platform for everything from pricing to contracts and compliance. This ensures that nothing slips through the cracks during the construction process.
